Subclavian Vein Line Insertion
Per Gurmukh Sahota, palpate the clavicle. Feel for the notch, palpating medial to lateral, where the clavicle begins to turn. Give local. Insert the needle, hit the clavicle. Then rotate so the needle faces the sternum. Slip underneath the clavicle to reach the subclavian vein (while aspirating for blood return).
If aim is too deep, lung injury can occur. If aim is too superior, arterial puncture can occur.
