MAC Line with a SLIC – Flow Rates
Flow rates depend on the manufacturer and specific configurations; however, typical values for multi-lumen access catheter (MAC) ports and the single-lumen infusion catheter (SLIC) are as follows:
- MAC distal port (no catheter): 29,000 mL/hr
- MAC distal port (7 French [Fr] SLIC): 12,000 mL/hr
- MAC proximal port: 6,000 mL/hr
- SLIC (per ACCRAC podcast): 125 mL/min (7,500 mL/hr)
For comparison, a 16-gauge peripheral IV catheter has a flow rate of approximately 11,000 mL/hr.
Therefore, the distal port should be prioritized for rapid volume resuscitation. A second volume line can be placed through the SLIC, while infusions or a third volume line can be administered through the proximal port.
